Lobo, Texas

This is not just an entire town, but a GHOST TOWN. Located four miles away from TEXARRAKIS, it only became a ghost town in 1991, but was bought by a group of German artist types. Unfortunately, they do not live there, they only use it as a vacation spot a few times out of the year.

They have their own motel and swimming pool, though! An entire town as a Fort Awesome compound!

Off Grid in Texas

Jul

This couple is going off grid in Terlingua, which is in the Big Bend area of far West Texas. Their fort awesome is similar to our plan for ours, except I think they are probably more competent than we are; they were able to get things set up on their first attempt. We may have to enlist their help ( or the field lab) in setting up our wind generator.

I fear we may not be as well established as they are for several years, because we are learning on our feet; we are incompetent city kids!

This is an inspiring fort awesome.

Also known as the Southwest Texas Alternative Energy And Sustainable Living Field Laboratory!  This is an amazing project and an amazing fort awesome. Located in Terlingua, which is in the Big Bend region of far West Texas, this guy has lived out in the Chihuahuan desert since 2007, has a rain catchment system, and is building something quite spectacular using steel trellises and old cargo containers. He has also managed a functioning rain catchment system!

Make sure to check out his daily blog, as well as his webpage!

This hostel in Georgia features many different structures, tree houses and geodesic domes of all varieties. Some up in trees, some at the base of trees, and some up on stilts.

Started 35 years ago on 133 acres of forest and swamp land, this Fort Awesome is nesteled into the dense, lush, sub-tropical forests of Georgia.

The Rancho Costa Nada; The Dirt Cheap Desert Homestead

This particular Fort Awesome is somewhat inspiring. Started by a newspaper reporter shortly after he was fired for the second time, this is the ultimate in low budget desert living. He got his land extremely cheap as he was reporting on desert land auctions; $325 for 10 acres.

Phil here went out to this land, by himself, in his three cylinder Geo Metro, and found himself an interesting, weird slew of neighbors. He built himself a shack mostly out of salvaged materials, for a grand total of $139, and his electrical system consists of jumper cables on his car battery.

This is inspiring because this is what one man was able to accomplish with barely anything, and little effort; so it should stand to reason that with more people and more money you should be able to accomplish a lot more, right??

Touch the Earth Ranch-House; a fort awesome built out of tires!

Jul

This Fort Awesome has been constructed out of discarded tires! Located in Colorado, these people are professional rammed earth tire structure builder people. Their finished product looks like a nuclear war bunker that would have been featured in a 70s science fiction movie! Really awesome.

The Principality of Sealand

First, a tool in the fight against Nazis during World War II, this sea platform was occupied by Major Paddy Roy Bates in 1967, and established as a sovereign micro-nation off the shore of the United Kingdom. It has it's own flag, passport, and currency, however they are not widely used. It has it's own laws, and it's own constitution, and while not technically a sovereign nation, the British courts have ruled it is out of their jurisdiction as it is three miles off shore, and they have received a German diplomat.

This is quite a powerful Fort Awesome.

La Loma Del Chivo

This is a hostel in Marathon, Texas which is approximately one hundred miles south of Texarrakis. Situated on the edge of Marathon in the Big Bend area of West Texas, this place is pretty awesome. First time we showed up here, they helped fill our vehicles with scrap building materials. We were stunned by the structures they had set up, amazing artistic structures, many made out of paper crete. It's very friendly and awesome here. The panoramic views are stunning (although they don't beat the panoramic views at Texarrakis (It is hard to beat the views on Texarrakis soil)). A true Fort Awesome, and one that you can stay at on bunk beds for ten bucks a night.
